Customers trust businesses that respond to reviews.

A review is written by one customer, but the response is read by everyone who comes after them.

Responding to reviews is no longer a courtesy tucked away at the end of the customer journey. It is visible proof that the business is listening.

People notice whether you respond.

BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 80% of consumers are more likely to use a business that responds to every review. At the other end of the spectrum, 42% say they are unlikely to use a business that ignores reviews entirely.

The response becomes part of the buying decision.

A future customer can see the original review and the owner response together. That makes the response a public demonstration of tone, accountability and customer service. It is especially important when the review is critical: the business gets a chance to show how it handles a problem when something did not go perfectly.

Speed matters. Personalization matters more.

A prompt acknowledgement is useful, but repeating the same generic thank-you under every comment can make a business look less attentive rather than more. BrightLocal also reports that generic or templated responses make 50% of surveyed consumers unlikely to choose a business.

Good responses refer to the actual experience. Thank customers for something specific when they praise your team, and acknowledge the issue clearly when they share criticism. Avoid blaming customers, discussing private account details, or promising a refund you have not authorized.

Give every review the right kind of attention.

A short positive review may need only two warm sentences. A detailed complaint about delays or an employee deserves more careful reading and a human reviewer. The same template should never be used for both.

  • Monitor all authorized channels so new feedback is noticed.
  • Use an AI draft as a starting point, not an automatic final answer.
  • Keep responses consistent with your actual brand voice.
  • Let an authorized teammate approve sensitive responses.
  • Look for repeated themes that your operations team can address.

The bigger goal is not simply more published replies. It is showing future customers that the business listens, responds thoughtfully, and uses feedback to improve.

What the research actually says.

BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026 surveyed U.S. consumers about expectations around online reviews and business-owner responses. These findings describe consumer attitudes, not guaranteed revenue, rankings, or conversion gains for an individual business.
